A MUSICAL LIFE OF SERVICE AND ADVENTURE
Career and Musical Contributions
Doug spent nearly 30 years as a full-time Minister of Music in churches across the United States, directing worship, teaching congregations, and leading choirs. His experience is broad and hands-on: he worked as a property manager, refinished pianos, assembled cars in a factory, and drove professional motorcoaches. For two decades he conducted a 40-voice youth choir that toured internationally, performing in Europe, Central America, and almost every U.S. state. He also directed WAVE Surf Camp on the East Coast for nine years, combining leadership and mentorship for young people through music and community activities. After relocating from Des Moines, IA to Tampa, FL in 2019, Doug taught elementary music in Pasco County Schools (Wesley Chapel) and continued a vigorous performance schedule, giving 270 concerts last year for retirement communities across Central and Southern Florida.
Personal Life and Impact
Doug’s long marriage to his college sweetheart, Janice, spans 44 years, and together they have two married sons and five grandchildren—relationships that reflect a stable family life supporting his demanding career. His varied work history and sustained commitment to youth choirs and community performances show how musical skills can open diverse career paths and create meaningful service opportunities. Students can see in Doug’s story an example of combining artistic talent, practical skills, and community leadership to build a lifetime of purposeful work and intergenerational influence.
